8/25/2016 0 Comments Blog Post #1 - "This year's theme" "I think, therefore I am." - What does it mean to me?
To me this quote means, If I think it and belive it ,then I can become it. What I mean by this is that if you think you can do something and you believe you can do that somthing you will be able to do it, then you will think that you can do anything you put your mind to. For example, if you really want to get straight A's in school but you think that it will never ever happen then, it probobly won't happen. But, if you keep the mind set that you can do it then you will believe it which will lead you to being able to. Eventually you will become your success, when you change, everything changes for you. So to summarize "I think, therefore I am." means to believe in anything that you think is impossible. |
This piece is part of something called a abstraction ladder. This is supposed to be abstract art. It express Mariah Carey and how she infuenced other singers. The redish dot represents Mariah, the swirls represent the singers and the music they made becausehearing Mariah Careys music influenced them to become singers them selves.
The phrase " I think therfore I am" is the key principle Rene Descartes lived by. I means "If I think i exist, then I must exist." I had done a post like this one explaining what this quote means, after reading about Descartes I now know the reasoning behind this. Blog post #5
Descartes Post Rene Descartes expains the following,"I think therfore I am." He questioned everthing including if he could trust his mind and body. He came to the conclusion that he could only trust his mind. He gives the example, I see men out the window but do I really see men, I see a coat and a hat. he is physicaly seeing peopel with his eyes but knows they are men. This is because of perception authority "regulats" what we "see" a coat and a hat means there u is a man. So he concludes if I think there are men, they must be men. which brings us back to his key principle "I think therefore I am". Mind over body, thought v.s sences. Growth vs Fixed Mindset
Growth v.s Fixed mindset, how does this apply to art? How has the idea of fixed vs. growth mindset changed over time? How does art contribute to this idea? Going into the subject of art, having a positive attitude and having a growth mindset is key. When drawing or thinking about going into an art class without any experience one might think to themselves “I don’t want to sign up, I can’t draw.” For those who have a growth mindset the response should be, “I can do this, even if I don’t know how.” To understand how a growth and fixed mindset works we need to know what a growth and fixed mindset is. Having a growth mindset means that you understand that talents and abilities can be developed. Like Eduardo Briceno said, “Having a growth mindset is critical to success”. People with fixed mindsets believe that you are born with your abilities, intelligence and talents. Over time, your mindset can change, you’ll learn different opinions and information that will lead you into two different paths. As professor Carol Dweck mentioned in her past interview with Sal Khan, “When people with a fixed mindset fail, they conclude that they are incapable”. This is a concept that many people should consider changing in their lifestyle. I personally have a fixed mindset but I’m working on changing . Let's take art for instance, many people such as myself always thought that I could never draw or I would never learn to draw. This simply isn’t true because with practice you can do anything. So is having a growth mindset better than having a fixed mindset? In our opinion, yes. A fixed mindset is destructive, having this will never get you anywhere in life. In a video about mindset and success the man explains that many of the world's most successful people were thought to have “no future” but as many other great people they build their abilities. As humans we have a tendency of quitting, but with effort you can train your brain to get smarter, repeating an action helps build strength. For example, Professor Carol Dweck conducted an experiment with young students some results were surprising. “I love a challenge”, is what a 10 year old boy said after he was given a problem that was a bit to hard for him. This young boy has developed a growth mind. When people with fixed mindset fail, they conclude that they are incapable, while people with a growth mindset believe they are open and value more opinions which, in the long run will serve as a tool to collect more information and lead you to success. Discription of Visual Piece
The visual piece that we have made represents the growth and fixed mindset of an artist. When someone hears the word “artist” they don’t usually think of all the thought artists put into their paintings. Instead they think, “Oh, all they do is make pretty paintings.” Being an artist takes a lot of self-trust, thick skin, and most importantly a “growth mindset”. On our symbolic piece, the right side of the brain represents the growth mindset which is positive and bright. The left side of the brain represents the fixed mindset: negative and unfocused. To recap, everyone either chooses to think they are born with their abilities and not grow or believe in themselves and go far. "What is an American"
Tome being and american is believing in the idea that you can have a better life and future. Also, having rights that everyone deserves and should have. Being American doesn't mean living in America, as long as you have the ideals that you believe in, and have opportunities you are american. You stand by the flag, you protect this country but you can be loyal to another as well. Living the "American Life" to me is being happy and having a good life with or without a family, You don't have to make it big as long a as you thrive and are content with your life you will be living the American life. Having eligibility to all needs and rights is what people believe in. Being American and living the American life isn't about money or fame its about being able to express your self and culture. To share your part in the would. I don't think that you have to be a legal citizen to make you american,I feel that if you are here it is for a reason only you known and you want to accomplish. You have to obey the laws but at the same time change them. Just to sum up being american, a true american is having dreams and beliefs. living the American life is whatever you make it out to be. For me the american life is being happy and caring for people so you can have a bigger brighter future, for yourself and others. Poem "I like You" inspired by "I too hear America Sing" by Langston Hughes I, like you, am human The hopeless Man in the corner They take me to the place between states when neighbors pass by I sit up straight I thrive And strengthen myself Till morning, I'll set down my tools when neighbors pass by Nobody can laugh I work hard Then. Because they will open their eyes And see clearly I like you will have another day |
